A decade ago, the consensus was that the digital world would give millions of previously unheard citizens an effective voice. Now, the aftermath of recent events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, brought to people’s attention another dimension of digital has. The rise of fake news, radicalisation, and hate speech or polarised dialogue shattered democracy and its principles, creating a danger zone for the existence of democratic societies. Nowadays, people need to learn how to differentiate between what is true and what is untrue and what aspects of the digital world affect democracy. 

By searching for the elements that create the digital world and the online trends known by the youth, we choose to develop a ready-to-scale workshop where participants can use these digital components to find the solutions needed for the problems that democracy is facing today.

Ready to scale solution:

{Error 404} is a hybrid workshop designed as a multiplayer game, where players will be put in the position of active citizens. In their journey, they have to confront various challenges of democracy in the digital era, such as fake news, hate speech, surveillance, human rights, and security.

The purpose of this game is to disseminate the right knowledge about the challenges that democracy meets online and also to inspire the participants to find effective solutions for those problems. The project is a hybrid workshop designed as a multiplayer game, where players will be put in the position of active citizens.

In their journey, the active citizens have to confront various challenges of democracy in the digital era, such as fake news, hate speech, surveillance, discrimination, human rights, security, and so on. Going from one step to another, the active citizens have the mission to solve them to reach the final stage: {Error 404 – solved}.

{Error 404} is an interactive method (a game) through which players will learn about the effects of digital spaces upon democracy. In this game, the error symbolizes the difficulties of democracy in today’s digital context. The players will hone their resilience skills, empowering them to see any change as an opportunity to evolve, and learn something new.
